Care Enough
I always take pride in being intelligent. I’m not trying to commend myself, that’s beside the point. I’d rather be tagged as intellectual than pretty. I don’t ridicule those people classified as low cognitive and I always have this fear of being behind in my class. I admire people who are highly intellectual; I’d trade everything to be in their shoe. But behind the facade of hypocrisy, we always have this unjustified sense to sneer on people who are not gifted with average intellect. Most jokes revolve around one’s “stupidity,” as we call it. But have we ever thought that it’s not plain stupidity but the lack of knowledge or none at all. I took SpEd, as a therapy, to keep me distracted, a road away from the misery lane. For two semesters, we talked about facts and strategies, swallowed in information about different disabilities. But none of those theories prepared me with what I encountered last week. Those disabilities were given faces. I spent an entire week in Zapater SpEd Center. I realized that taking calls is way easier than teaching kids especially those with disabilities and sub-average intellect. My heart was melted way down the melting point with compassion, exhausted by repeating information hoping they’d retain it, trying to express myself in the most explicit way that they could comprehend it. Beyond the bruises in my skin, I felt affection for these kids. They can be very sweet, the next moment they can stab you with a pencil on your arm. My eyes have always been opened, but now I can see clearly that they don’t just need understanding and patience, they need someone who cares, someone who cares enough to help them.
