Oblation Pride
On my way home yesterday I passed by UP. Vendors of corsage and graduation wreaths forced me into buying by shoving those graduation paraphernalia into my face, I was just passing by. It' was UPCC's graduation. UP's Commencement Exercises is always held around this time of the year. UP is considered by many as an institution collecting brilliant minds. Some believe that graduating from one of the country's premier schools grants you a bragging right. There are people who forcedly emit an air superiority and that attitude overly irritates me. I’ve known some people who overemphasize that they are UPIANS. Being a graduate of UP would always be my greatest pride. Every UPian knows that a student’s life in the state university is beyond difficult; long exams, papers after papers, more paper works, deadlines to meet, projects to be completed. It was completely agonizing. Sometimes, I felt that we were made to be tormented by UP professors. When I say I graduated from UP, people always have this collective opinion, “Ah, bright d I ka.” stating it like a fact. It always sounds like a sweeping generalization for me. Modesty aside, I always respond, “Not all Upian’s are intelligent.” I’m just an average student in UP. But in a throng of people, I could be your first pick for someone who stands out intellectually. You get my drift? But when someone says, “Not all Upians are intelligent”, it doesn’t sound right. A non-Upian doesn’t get the authority to state that fact, it appears like a bitter biting taste. Every amount of idealism that holds my heart is mostly outline from this institution. You don’t scream your school brand; your intelligence should speak for you. Oscar Franklin Tan, a Filipino and a UP graduate, who delivered the Harvard Law graduation speech say , “Our studies were paid for by nameless poor farmers and fishermen, and I hope to one day pay my dues” I share the same sentiment. UP’s tuition fee is subsidized by the government; the taxpayers money gave me an opportunity to complete my college education. I couldn’t be grateful enough.
